The Good Store

An award-winning gift store with a unique focus – The Good Store only sells USEFUL presents, nothing that is merely decorative that will sit on the shelf and gather dust. We ask 'What's it do?", says storekeeper Marshall Martin.

'People don't need more stuff, they just want useful stuff". He put his money where his mouth was in 2006, and The Good Store was born in Western Australia.

The Good Store opened its Melbourne doors in the heart of the hip and happening village of Yarraville late last year. Marshall stepped off the train at Yarraville train station – fell in love with the suburb and its incredibly diverse community – and so the store's Melbourne sibling came to be.

The store is set to celebrate its six month anniversary on June 1st with Marshall saying, 'We may even throw in some vanilla slices with our regular cup of tea." That's the kind of store it is – it's a new type of retail. With room to move, freedom to pick up and touch, product story cards to explain what things are and how they work, an award-winning website for pre and post visit perusal and purchase and most importantly – that cup of tea to sip on while you browse.

The Good Store is surrounded in Yarraville by award-winning butcher shops, bakers, and even other fine gift shops. It sits right next to the iconic Sun Theatre in the long disued and architecturally stunning Old Post Office. Yarraville locals have welcomed the store with open arms and -get' the store's concept of only selling things that do something – in six months no-one's ever asked for a figurine, but they've bought some very fine hammers, potato peelers and dog bowls.

What does the future hold for the store? Marshall says, 'We're just focused on making The Good Store in Yarraville live up to its name – at least for now".
