RMITUniversityresearchhasrevealedbiggapsinAustraliansunderstandingofsafesexwithfewpeopleusingcontraceptivescorrectlyandmostknowingverylittleabouttherangeofcontraceptiveoptionsonthemarket.brbrPreliminaryresultsfromtheContraceptiveExperiencesProjectshowhalfofthepeopleusingcondomsdidnotwearthemeachtimetheyhadsexwhileabout12percentofwomenusingoralcontraceptivesmissedapillatleastonceamonth.brbrAliciaMiticwhoisinvestigatingthecontraceptivepracticesknowledgeattitudesanddecisionmakingofadultsaspartofherDoctorofClinicalPsychologyatRMITsaidmostofthe576peoplewhohadtakenpartintheonlinesurveyhadonlyvagueknowledgeofthecontraceptiveoptionsavailable.brbrFewrespondentsunderstoodthenittygrittydetailsofthecontraceptivestheyusedsuchasfailureratesandpotentialsideeffectsMsMiticsaid.brbrAbigconcernisthateventhoughmostpeoplewereusingsomeformofcontraceptionprimarilycondomsorthepillfewwereusingthemcorrectlyincreasingtheirriskofunwantedpregnancyandsexuallytransmittedinfections.brbrTheyalsohadverylittleknowledgeofthewiderangeofcontraceptivesavailablemanyhadneverevenheardofsomeoftheoptionsthatwerelistedinthesurveysuchasinjectionsimplantsIUDsornaturalfamilyplanningmethods.brbrOtherearlyfindingsfromthequestionnaireincludebr40percentofrespondentshadneverbeentestedforsexuallytransmittedinfectionsbr14percenthadbeendiagnosedwithsomeformofSTIinthepastprimarilygenitalwartsherpesandchlamydiabr17percentwereunsureoftheirpartnersSTIstatusbr3percenthadliedtotheirpartnerinthepastabouttheirSTIstatusbrMorethanonethirdofrespondentshadexperiencednegativesideeffectsrelatedtocontraceptivesbrbrVolunteersaged18oroverarestillneededtotakepartintheanonymousKnowyouroptionsonlinesurveywithrecruitmentofparticipantsopenuntilFebruary.brbrThequestionnaireisathttpwww.rmit.edu.aupsychologycontraceptiveexperiencesprojectbrbr
