Dinley Jones Interview

How would you describe your music?
I would describe my music as a modern blend of pop, funk and hip hop. I build my songs as much as possible around catchy melodies and gripping hooks. Beats that will make you dance and lyrics that will play with your heart strings. I want to make music that people can enjoy.

Can you tell us about your new album? What was the inspiration?
We are making an EP. I am a big fan of storytelling, and creating a world around my music. You could say that this single is the beginning of that world. Tyler the Creator, the Weeknd and even Melanie Martzinez have built albums and EP's around characters, themes and costumes. Synthesizing their audio and visual platform to create truly extraordinary pieces of art. I hope this can be something similar for my audience.

What are you musical influences?
My musical influences are Michael Jackson, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, Zayn, The Weeknd. The list goes on!
Do you prefer performing live or recording?
This is a hard question for me personally. I would have to choose performing. Writing and recording are both fun and satisfying parts of the process. But the feeling of live performing, to a crowd, singing along. I wouldn't replace that feeling for anything in the world. It's why I make music in the first place!
What should we expect from your upcoming tour?
There is no tour planned at the moment. But it is a dream of mine to put together a large scale production or show with choreography, interactions, maybe even some sets and designs. Hopefully someday soon we can make it happen.

What motivates you most when writing music?
I don't want to divide people. I want to make music that brings people together. Storytelling and writing are influential mediums, so I want to build a world that my audience can be a part of. That way it feels like the listeners really are on this journey with me.
Which music/artists are you currently listening to?
I've been listening to a lot of old school Justin Timberlake lately, and a band called PRETTYMUCH. I really like how they blended their smooth pop vocals with hip hop infused beats. It creates a groove, urgency and energy that I want to try to replicate.

What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
My brother when I was younger was a massive inspiration for me. He played piano when I was growing up. So I grew up performing with him.

If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?
I would love to collaborate with Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars or the Weeknd. Their music and styles all feel like they could blend sonically with mine quite well.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced in the music industry?
My biggest challenge so far has been finding an audience to share my music with. I love what I do, and the chance to share that with the world is something I don't take for granted.
What's next, for you?
Hopefully an EP! More music videos! An album! A tour?! Honestly the sky's the limit, and I am just grateful to be able to do what I love every day. I'm so excited for the journey and can't wait to see where it takes me.
