The Perfume Garden Returns To Sweeten The Senses

After a roaring success at the Malthouse in 2004, playwright Raj Moodley is bringing The Perfume Garden back to Melbourne audiences from March 14 2007. The truely Australian style Bollywood story will bring the Indian experience to you - the Atheneum Theatre?s Comedy Club will be decked out to the setting of a traditional Indian wedding - combined with singing and dancing - Bollywood style!

Set in an outer-suburb of Melbourne, The Perfume Garden explores some of multicultralim?s absurdities. Chitra and Satya sell spices and want nothing more than their son, Anand, to marry a nice young Indian girl who will help him take over their business. Devi is the perfect match, however Anand is reluctant to set a date.

When a genie, in the shape of the paralysed Aunt Ayah, magically appears, she unleashes the aspect of Anand that his parents have tried to supress and in liberating Anand from the narrow path planned for him.

The Perfume Garden script was workshopped by the Playbox where it received draft commissioning and was shortlisted for the 2003 Asialink Playwriting Award. Raj Moodley?s recently completed novel Syrup, is the first instalment of a trilogy focusing on the bizarre events in the life of Anand. Moodley has worked for Playbox in the Twilight Series for the Melbourne Festival and La Mama for Jack Hiberd?s play Colonies of Desire.

As well as radio plays for the ABC, he has narrated wildlife documentaries and has recently beentaking his one-man show Mansmriti: The Hindu Ten Commandments to various stages in Melbourne. Raj has also worked for over ten years in the perfume industry.
