Battle of the Pop Princesses!
Have you noticed pop tart clones have inundated the pop charts of late? Colgate commercial white teeth, flat stomachs exposed with tight midriff tops, cascading blonde hair and Reef Oil tans - sound familiar? It seems record companies have stumbled across a winning formula and are churning out pops version of the Barbie doll at an alarming rate. Who do you predict will stand the test of time and claim the reigning Princess of Pop tiara?
Britney Spears - current hottest contender
Her controversial schoolgirl routine (in Baby One More Time) sent the world into a salivating frenzy. Next followed her sexy dance routines, plunging necklines (displaying her rumoured breast implants) and super tight hipster pants, securing her place in pop history. Her impossibly flat tummy is always on display and not only have her two albums shot to the top of the charts, she has pop royalty on her side too. Madonna has worn Britney t-shirts to public appearances and the two were rumoured to be in negotiation to record a duet together. N-Syncer, Justin Timberlake is her boyfriend.
Christina Aguillera - runner up
Christina is sassy and husky. Her first album (Come on Over) has had enormous success and her duet with Latin heart-throb Ricky Martin has secured her place in the hierarchy of pop royalty. She's had her share of notoriety -the press have claimed she has had breast implants and Eminem implied she is less than pure on "The Real Slim Shady". Our only complaint - she needs to learn less is more isn't always true (particularly where her clothes are concerned) and crimped hair was a bit dubious the first time around.
Jessica Simpson
Jessica is a Texan beauty with long legs, a gorgeous smile and only slightly better dress sense. She has three major hits to her credit and has been compared to such industry greats as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. She's got a big voice and we expect to see a bit more of her in the future. She's also snagged herself a boy band babe, Nick from 98 degrees.
Mandy Moore
She's sweet as candy and only 16 years old. With two hits under her belt so far, Mandy has a way to go yet before she catches up to Britney and Christina. Critics are on her side though; she's just scored a role in the upcoming movie, A Walk to Remember.
Who has the ultimate staying power? Only time will tell. If you're sick of the walking talking Barbie dolls, thank heavens for the sassy lasses who aren't afraid to embrace their own styles, both musically and fashionably.
