John Flanagan started his career as a junior in an advertising agency in Sydney hoping one day to be a writer. It wasn't until he wrote a highly uncomplimentary poem about a senior executive at the agency that his talent was revealed. As a secretary busily typed out copies of the poem to share with colleagues, one of the company directors came across it and as it turned out, he agreed with John's views and decided to train him in copywriting. After living the Mad Men lifestyle for twenty years, John teamed with a friend to develop the TV sitcom, Hey Dad!, which went to air for eight years.
The Ranger's Apprentice series originally comprised of twenty short stories, which John wrote to encourage his twelve-year-old son, Michael, to enjoy reading. Since then the series has come a long way. Now sold to more than twenty countries, the series regularly appears on the New York Times Bestseller List and has been shortlisted in children's book awards in Australia and overseas. John lives with his wife, Leonie, in the Sydney beachside suburb of Manly. He is currently writing further titles in the Ranger's Apprentice series.
