Interview with Ivan Gough

Ivan Gough is one part of Australian success TV Rock.

How did the Sensation gig come about?

Ivan Gough: We played separately at Sensation last year, and they liked what we did, so we got booked together this time.

What are you most looking forward to for Melbourne Sensation New Year's Eve?

Ivan Gough: Playing to the huge crowd will be fun. When you play a big tune to a crowd that size, when they cheer, you know about it!

How did it feel to hear your songs played all over the airwaves?

Ivan Gough: It's been great, and the support of local radio, especially Nova, has been amazing. It's always nice to know people like what you're doing.

Did you have any pre-conceived ideas about the music industry?

Ivan Gough: Not really. It can be rewarding, but it can also be the toughest business in the world sometimes! I kinda expected that, but I work hard, and that pays off usually. If you bust your butt, only good will come of it.

What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Ivan Gough: I like listening to electronica from artists like Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Phillip Glass, Jean Michelle Jarre to relax. Then I love deep chuggy house for late night driving, and 80's bands like The Smiths, The Cure, Duran Duran, and others when I need a lift!

What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

Ivan Gough: More overseas touring, and some more singles. We have about 6 singles in the pipeline at the moment, the first of which will be out in the next couple of weeks.

Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Ivan Gough: When I was making deep progressive house in 2002, the whole scene for that music in Australia died. It was tough, and I struggled financially. But I kept at it, and I'm still here today.

Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Ivan Gough: Both. Djing has rewards as does producing

What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Ivan Gough: Hearing a synthesizer for the first time changed my life. Then after hearing early Chicago House music in 1987 I knew what I wanted to do with my life!

What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Ivan Gough: Criticism is always hard. But you just gotta keep at it.

What's a typical day like?

Ivan Gough: Up with baby and wife for breakfast, hit the studio around 10am, then work until 5 or so. Walk dog, and then cook dinner for the family. Glass of wine, and TV after bub is in bed!

What has been your favorite part of becoming a music artist?

Ivan Gough: The fact that every day is different. You never know what you'll be doing next.

If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Ivan Gough: Giorgio Moroder. The man is a genius, and we owe a debt of gratitude to him for the records he made in the 70's. When he made "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer in the mid 70's, he changed dance music forever.

Are you single? What do you look for in a partner?

Ivan Gough: I am married! I always wanted a girl that understood what I do. I travel a lot, and needed a girl who could put up with that.

Do you have a website fans can visit?

Ivan Gough: www.myspace.com/tvrock. We're updating that page now, and will have a new improved version online soon.

Can you tell us 5 things required for a happy healthy & enjoyable life?

Ivan Gough: 1. Never take anything to seriously
2. Work hard
3. Fall in love
4. Take the time to smell the roses
5. Drink good wine and eat good food

What is the story behind the name, TV ROCK?

Ivan Gough: We had a few names with TV and Rock in them, then we put those two together and we liked the result.
