Hi Turtle Girl,
Beauty Doc tip:
Hair on the upper lip mostly grows in two directions (sometimes more). Hot wax provides effective results, removing unwanted hair quickly, and is one of the most common hair removal beauty salon treatments.
Hair where you don't want it... Not a good look for summer; fortunately a variety of professional salon treatments and at-home hair removal products are available. Bleaching, depilatory cream, tweezing or waxing are your temporary options. (Shaving will make your problem worse, so don't go there!) For permanent solutions you may want to look into electrolysis or laser.
*Bleaching is pain free, but not hair free. If your hair texture is fine, this method will lighten unwanted hair; however there is regrowth upkeep, especially if your lip has visible thick, dark hair, so you may find one of the hair removal alternatives suits you better if this is the case.
*Depilatory cream is also pain free, easy to use and dissolves the hair. The drawback (compared to waxing) is that because the hair is removed only to the skins surface, within a couple of days all the hair grows back at once. While hair appears more sparse when it grows back from waxing because the new hairs grows back differently.
*Waxing and tweezing removes the hair by the roots, giving longer lasting results – you will be hair free for about 4 – 6 weeks. Visit your beauty therapist for a professional lip wax, although, once you are confident you could do your own at home lip wax. Hot wax is better for lip waxing leaving the area clean and smooth.
*Electrolysis removes the hair permanently by destroying the hair follicle with a mild electric current. As an alternative to electrolysis, laser is fast and effective and is a permanent hair removal option. If you'd like more specifics on laser hair removal this article contains consumer information from the USA.
To prolong hair growth between treatments, hair retardant cream can be used. This cream can also be used to enhance the results of electrolysis also (check with your practitioner).
Hair retardant cream is an ongoing process designed to lighten and inhibit the growth of facial hair over time, slowing regrowth by weakening the hair structure. Consult your skin specialist before using a topical products like this, as you may need a prescription.
