Makeup Brushes

Hi Bella!
I desperately need some new makeup brushes and am wondering what you would recommend – especially for eyes. I’ve heard it is better to have synthetic brushes.
Please help!

Beauty Doc tip:
“The proper tools are as important as the makeup itself.” Bobbi Brown

Buying makeup brushes is such a personal decision, so I can only guide you with my recommendations and then you can do some exploring of your own to find what you really like!

Firstly, have a think about what you actually need, so that you don’t end up with a bunch of brushes that you neither need nor want (and may not know how to use…). Well made and designed brushes give you the capability for a professional application to create a flawless finish. The questions below will help to give you a clearer idea as to where you need to start.

Do you use powder or cream eyeshadows?
Do you use 1, 2, 3 or more eyeshadow colours regularly?
Do you blend your eyeshadow?
Do you blend your eyeliner?
Do you use concealer?

For powder shadows, natural bristles are better, whereas with cream or gloss eye makeup, I prefer a synthetic bristle.
Try Bobbi Brown’s eye contour for a good all-rounder natural bristle brush, and Red Earth have a couple of good syntho’s for creamier eye makeup application (creams and glosses tend to stick to natural bristles and don’t glide on as easily).

I love Bobbi Brown’s essentials brush collection – the eyeshadow brush is great for base colour or highlighter, and then use the eye contour brush for your socket. Have a few brushes avail for different colours, otherwise you will end up with a muddy application instead of clean, true to colour shades.

For blending, I LOVE Stila’s #5 – soft, natural bristles that make blending a breeze!

For blending eyeliner, the M.A.C #219 is perfect – gives a beautiful smoky smudge to pencil eyeliner, or you can apply a shadow under your eyeliner with this nifty pointed brush, to soften the look of your liner.

Concealing is easy – if you prefer a synthetic brush, then go with Vincent Longo’s concealing brush, which is nice and wide for a quick, easy application; Stila comes out tops for me in the concealing dept – the #2 gives precision concealing, and then blend edges lightly with #11.

To go synthetic or natural depends on each brush, and the makeup you are applying. It is more important to go for brushes that give you the effect you desire to create for your finished look!!

Good makeup is only as good as the tools you are using, so invest wisely, and look after your brushes and they will give you beautiful results for years to come :)

* Wipe any excess makeup off your brushes each time you use them to keep them in good condition.
