One Foot Wrong
Outside was forbidden, It was dangerous because it had no walls or roof telling you when to stop.
Held prisoner by her reclusive religious parents, Hester’s only friends are the objects in her home- spoon, tree, broom and axe. They tell her to do forbidden things, like go outside... And it is when she does venture into the outside world that Hester discovers the beauty of nature, which inspires her to draw and paint to escape the reality of her captivity.
One Foot Wrong is a complex mixture of emotions, described equally as startling, strange, magical, mad, poetic, dark, beautiful, tragic and sunlit. It’s a tale which will take you on an emotional roller coaster with the protagonist Hester as she finally makes her journey out into the wide open world.
As Patrick McCabe (author of The Butcher Boy and Winterwood) does in his work, and mark Haddon did with The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time Sofie Laguna presents an innocent child narrator dealing with shocking circumstances. Sofie Laguna’s words are like whispers inside your head, the action in the story moving, and while the story told by Hester is often dark and terrible, the sheer brilliance of the language and imagery illuminated the pages.
Film rights have already been sold to the producer of Saw and Wolf Creek, and the book is seeing international success, with Italian and Dutch rights already sold and interest from the Us, Germany and Russia.
"An authentic voice, an evocation of childhood and memory that, for all its terrors, evokes the sublime, tragic moment when innocence submits to experience. Laguna creates a world and a character and a language that we become immersed within. That she does it with a subject matter of such destructive cruelty, that hse does it with such rigour and power, is a testament to her craft, skill and maturity. This is the opposite of what tabloids do: this is humane, passionate, true."
Christos Tsiolkas, author of Landed and Dead Europe.
