Shine Free Face...

Hey Bella,
I'm just wondering if you can answer a question for me?
I have emailed others about this but never received any feedback. I'm 16 and have a good skincare routine, I've tried heaps of brands but I can't seem to make the shine go away! It's not oily shine but I'm sick of wasting money on things that don't work for me. My mum says it's just because my skin is clean, but why am I the only one who seems to have this shiny skin?
I have to wear face powder to school everyday to cover it but by the end of the day, I'm shiny again!
Please help me fast!
Thanx heaps
Melanie

Hi Melanie

Beauty Doc tip:
Some skins require kinder treatment than others, and the secret of an angelic sheen on healthy skin is a clear complexion - the secret is improving the texture and colour, as facial skin beauty is the outward visible sign of a healthy disposition!

Seems like you are working too hard to keep your face clean, and you need to go easy on the amount of cleansing you are doing. Especially, if your skin feels tight and squeaky clean after you have cleansed. If this is so, then you may be stripping your skin too much with your cleansing routine, and the result is that your skin is actually overproducing oil to compensate for your skin being so squeaky clean. If your skin is not normally on the oily side, then this may not be excessive giving the appearance of an oil slick, hence your thoughts that it is not oil, but more than enough oil is being produced giving you this shiny appearance.

If your skin goes pink or even red, this is also a sign that your products are too harsh and you may be over exfoliating which means that you are removing too much of the top layer of dead skin cells, revealing what appears to be shiny new skin.

A couple more suggestions –
  • try using more of a nourishing, gentle cleanser – so that your skin does not feel squeaky clean, and a moisturiser that is light on the oil content (so that you have some oil on the surface of your skin and your skin will not think it then has to produce so much),
  • or if you are happy with your skincare, (however, I’m inclined to think that this may be contributing to your skin dilemma) then use an anti-shine preparation, like the Body Shops “mattifier” – a clear gel designed to “beat shine fast”! A product like this can be worn alone or under makeup for long lasting matte results J

  • Always use tepid water to cleanse, and never put your face directly under the stream of hot water from the shower head.

A few other reminders (that you’ve probably heard a million times, but any of these may be the change your skin needs!)

Avoid skincare with high levels of alcohol (read the ingredients list and if alcohol is in the top 4, then steer clear).

Avoid moisturisers and makeup with too much oil as this will also give the appearance of shiny skin – look for light, non-greasy formulas to rebalance your skin after cleansing, .
Keep your greasy food intake to a minimum, as eating foods high in oil and fat can effect your skin, esp during your teens when your skin is going through a lot of changes.

Luminising foundations and iridescent powders will also make your face look shiny. Foundations with silicon as a main ingredient are designed to give a dewy look, however this translates to shiny if your skin is already on the shiny side…
