The story begins with the tale of a human baby; shipwrecked, and orphaned who is then taken captive by a tiger in the African jungle. Luckily, the infant boy is rescued from the clutches of that same tiger by a gorilla known as Kala, who takes the baby into his care and raises him as part of his gorilla family. Christened by his jungle family as Tarzan, the boy grows up to develop all the instincts and prowess of a jungle animal.
This peaceful and sheltered world is turned upside down by the arrival of a human expedition and the revelation that Tarzan is, in fact one of them. As he struggles to decide to which family he belongs, his dilemma is further complicated by his feelings for the beautiful young Jane, and the discovery that a trusted member of his new human family is plotting to harm the apes.
