GIRL.COM.AU - 'STARS OF TOMORROW' SERIES

Melbourne-based band the elements is comprised of vocalist Jenni James and songwriter/musician Marty Powell. Described as a "happy rock" band, the elements have enjoyed success overseas in places such as Buenos Aires and Cordoba in Argentina. They have also performed showcases in L.A. where they received much interest from record companies.

the elements will be releasing their debut EP shortly – we were privileged enough to have a listen to their new album which features some fantastic tracks.

This month's Star of Tomorrow Spotlight is on band member Jenni James.

When did you realise that music was your passion?
Always. Could sing Frere Jaque all the way through when I was 18 months old. First performed in public at a school thing at age 13.

List three musical influences:
Blondie / Bowie / Beatles

How many years have you been performing?
15 years.

Do you write your own material?
Yes-ish, write with partner/collaborator Marty Powell.

Have you found the Internet to be helpful/useful in fast-tracking your music career?
HUGELY useful! We were discovered by an agent in Los Angeles on the internet and he invited us to come over for some shows. Our music has got wide exposure in Australia on mp3.com.au, and we were also featured on a website in Argentina where our 'Welcome Home' EP got to number 2 in the charts.

In following your dream, who has helped you along the way?
Lots of great people like - Marty Powell, songwriter extraordinaire, My Dad who has been to every show I have ever done in my home state and Jeff Jenkins, a music journalist with passion and real insight.

Is there anything you wish you could change about the music industry?
I guess I'd like to see less emphasis on how people look and more importance on the music. But then I might not be able to dress up as much!! I'd also like to see more people going to see live music more often.

What advice can you offer to other budding young artists?
Never give up. Ever. Try and stay positive.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years time?
Mainstream recording artist with a major label recording contract. Look out world!

The elements debut EP has just been recorded, and will hopefully be out towards the middle of this year, listen out for the track "Radio".
