16-year-old Agnes -Apple' Bailey (Hudgens) has never had an easy life. She's been in and out of foster care all of her life and her abusive foster mother June (Dawson) is a drug addict that only wants her for the welfare money she provides. Desperate to escape, Apple decides to run away and finds her biological father, Tom Fitzpatrick (Fraser), who is now a wealthy broker with his own family.

Tom agrees to take Apple in, but quickly throws her back onto the street when Apple tells him she's pregnant and she intends to keep the baby. After crashing a stolen car, Apple winds up in hospital where chaplain Father McCarthy (Jones) arranges for her to stay in a suburban shelter for homeless teens.
