Something Else

Disheveled and washed up upon the shore, in her quest to explore new lands, she becomes a vagabond on higher ground, living a carefree existence. Empowered from bravery, she pioneers the windswept landscape. Strong, self-sufficient and learning to live off the land, she is the epitome of a Castaway.

The power of the wind and ocean breathed life into the garments showcasing them flowing before an unforgiving landscape. Welcoming for the first time, Australian Film Director Lorin Askill, to the collective, Something Else produced its debut short film, aptly titled Castaway, for the collection. The piece effectively takes its audience on a haunting journey of the Castaway, all the time exploring the landscape and its natural elements.

Lorin Askill is a Sydney based director and artist who works both in Australia and overseas. He often collaborates with brothers Daniel Askill (artist/director) and Jordan Askill (artist/jewellery designer. He has worked across fashion, music video and commercial worlds with the likes of BMW, Acne, Michelle Jank, Dion Lee and Phoenix to name a few.

'Since the location at Clovelly was really unfamiliar to me, I wanted to find a way to subtly distort the landscape and turn it into somewhere more alien…making it feel like the Castaway has unknowingly slipped into a different world." stated Lorin.

Creative Director of Something Else, Natalie Wood, also aimed for the film to have an -other world' sensibility and level of unease. Together Natalie and Lorin beautifully create a feeling of strange isolation and underlying dislocation within the everyday.
