White Dots

HELP! I'm 24 years old and I have noticed tiny white growths in my under eye area. I have heard that they are cholesterol deposits. Is this true? Do you have any suggestions?

Hi JR,

(Beauty Doc tip:
Pearly white bumps most often occur across the upper cheeks, under eyes, and sometimes on nose, or chin. You will often see this condition (known as Milia) in newborns, which generally disappears of its own accord, as the top layer of the skin is sloughed away naturally from sheets, clothing and general bathing.)

The white dots you are referring to could be what is known as milia - these are small "pearl-like" whiteheads. This is a common skin disorder and is a result of accumulated sebum (your skins natural oil) and dead skin cells that have collected in small pocket, and are trapped under the superficial top layer of your skin. It may look a little like small grains of sand.

Milia mostly occur on your face, but sometimes can be found on other areas like your décolletage, chest, back or shoulders, and once removed, will probably not return.

Your blocked pore/s will most likely disappear as quietly as they arrived, however, if you are wanting to find out more, my suggestion would be to visit your beauty therapist or naturopath for a consultation. Milia can form in conjunction w/ liver or gall bladder organs (these perform the function of fat breakdown), so see your naturopath or health care provider to gain more guidance in this area.

If you decide that removal is the option for you, then this requires a lancet to make on opening in the dead cell layer so that the hardened debris may gently escape through the incision, (with minimal disturbance to the surrounding and underlying areas - as you do not want to cause scarring through incorrect removal). Milia are easy to extract - your beauty therapist will be able to explain and perform the proper extraction method, as if you try to extract them yourself, you may scar or damage your precious skin.

*Apply Tee Tree essential oil directly upon removal to boost healing.

To boost your skins natural exfoliation function, try Jurlique's "Honey Cream" which utilizes the softening properties of honey, and the smoothing nature of AHA's, to work with the skin, and gently disperse milia.
